The stage for the final year of the MTV Australia Music Awards was a spectacular free-from lycra sculpture, which served as a canvas for the light show and video projection.
The Brief
The MTV awards show producers wanted a big, bright, bold and above all rock and roll, centerpiece for the 2009 award show stage. Broadcast around the world as part of MTV’s World Stage project, the spectacular stage sculpture was used to project lighting, lasers and video projection onto it’s smooth, tubular geometry.
The Concept
Working with, and inspired by a previous collaboration between Sydney-based design team, LAVA (Laboratory for Visionary Architecture) and MakMax Taiyo Middle East on the Green Void Fabric Art Installation for the 2008 Architectural exhibition in Sydney, the 2009 MTV Australia Music Awards Stage Structure employed simple geometry with minimal rigging and fixing.
The Materials
Standing 12 metres high and 40 meters in width, the colossal unsupported tubular structure was created with 250 square meters of Eclipse Bright Nylon Lycra 544 190gsm in white, with only minimal pocket sewing around the perimeter. Additional fabric sections were provided to create an entrance tunnel for the music acts and award winners.
