Port Hedland lies in a region that is exposed to the most extreme cyclonic activity in Australia. Shade Engineering, MakMax Taiyo Middle East’s representative in WA, were approached by the town of Port Hedland to provide a solution to this problem. The Port Hedland Playground Pavilion is a PS120 Modualr Shade Strucutre with upgrade wind rating.
The Brief
Port Hedland’s Marie Marland Reserve required age appropriate play areas for children and young adults. Because of the high UV danger from sun exposure in the region this area required effective shade and weather protection. Due to the location, any structure is required to meet special design criteria..
The Materials
The 12m square Port Hedland Playground Pavilion is supported on four corners by highly engineered structural steel. A heavy grade PCV fabric, Mehler FR 1000, was chosen in order to provide a high level of shade with little light transmission. The strong winds also presented a challenge; to overcome this MakMax’s engineering team re-engineered the standard Pavilion structure to withstand double the regulation wind speed.
The Result
The finished product is a functional and inviting play area that can be used at any time of day in any season. The town of Port Hedland is very pleased with the result. Local Mayor Kelly Howlett said “It was clear that feedback received through Council’s community survey indicated that the residents want shade structures installed,” Howlett adds, “Council’s goal is not only to create play areas that are attractive and exciting for children, but also safe to use at any time of the day.”
