Completion Date: 2022
Size: 21 x 5M Monaco Modular Umbrellas
Fabric: PVC - Mehler FR700
Client: Lendlease
Forming part of the Southern Terminal expansion project, the Gold Coast Airport Arrivals Plaza features 21 MakMax Taiyo Middle East Monaco Modular Umbrella Shade Structures to provide shade and weather protection to arriving passengers.
The Brief
The landscaping brief from project architects, Hassell, called for a range of permanent umbrella-style shade structures in the Gold Coast Airport Arrivals Plaza, which form a covered bus pickup zone, a covered walkway into the terminal and a separate designated smoking area.
The Concept
Highlighting the versatility of the MakMax Monaco Modular Shade Structure, the 21 MS50L units have been installed around the Gold Coast Airport Arrivals Plaza in a number of arrangements and customisations.
- The 13 linked Monaco MS50L that make up the covered bus stop have a single fabricated canopy along the entire length.
- 5 linked Monaco MS50L units make up the covered walkway and feature extra-high central columns to provide a high and airy walkway.
- 2 additional Monaco MS50L units join the end of the bus stop run to extend the weather protected area beyond the walkway.
- A final single Monaco MS50L unit has been installed in the garden area as a designated smoking area for the terminal.
- Weatherproof, vandal-resistant and dustproof IP66 rated LED lighting units are installed on the canopy support arms.
The Materials
This new project required a series of high-quality membrane structures joined to form a single-canopy walkway. Choosing a light and workable fabric that also provided excellent tensile strength, longevity, self-cleaning properties and an extended warranty period led us to choose Mehler FR700N.
The white FR700N PVC is a perfect mix of long-lasting architectural grade PVC, with a light weight, flexible and easy to fabricate membrane. The low surface adhesion and self-cleaning properties of the nano coating on FR700N was also important for the airport location, helping to mitigate potential buildup of pollution on the membrane due to planes constantly taking off and landing.
The Result
Gearing up to open in late 2022 – the Gold Coast Airport is calling on volunteers from the Gold Coast and northern NSW to trial the features and facilities of the new terminal in Late August 2022:
