Mercedes-Benz Stadium Atlanta
Project Details
Location: Atlanta, Georgia USA
Completion Date: August 2017
Size: 27,870 sqm
Fabric: ETFE Film
MakMax’s USA division, Birdair Inc., was selected as the specialty contractor for the roof pillow system and facade solution for the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The new state-of-the-art facility, opened in 2017, is the home to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and MLS Atlanta, and hosts concerts, conventions and other marquee sports and entertainment events.
The Materials
The stadium’s unique retractable oculus roof was designed by HOK and TVSDesign, with engineering expertise and input by Birdair. The “oculous” consists of eight steel-frame petals that retract, similar to the shutter of a camera lens. The petals are covered in three layered ETFE pillows. The roof creates an outdoor feel, allowing in natural sunlight when the weather is pleasant, and will protect players and fans during inclement weather.
The facade of the stadium features a single-layer ETFE skin supported by a cable net system. The design requires approximately 12,500 square meters of triple-layered ETFE pillows and air inflation system and approximately 15,000 square meters of vertical single-layered ETFE film and cable net.
The Result
The project team, lead by HOK, selected the global MakMax/Taiyo Kogyo group for this project because of our tensile architecture expertise, construction skill and unique ETFE film design. The Mercedes-Benz Stadium is an architectural icon in Atlanta and one of the world’s most exciting stadium designs.
