PTFE Tensile Roof for Tuwaiq Palace, Riyadh
Project Details
Location: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Size: 1300 m2
Fabric: PTFE (dual layer)
Client: Saudi Lebanese Tarouk Contracting Company Ltd.
Tuwaiq Palace, located in Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter, is one of Saudi Arabia’s most iconic architectural landmarks and winner of the 1998 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Originally developed as a Diplomatic Club, it merges contemporary design with historical Najdi forms—desert fort walls, oases, and Bedouin tents.
The palace features an 800-meter curving wall, lush interior gardens, and multiple tent-like structures that define its visual identity.

The Brief
The ArRiyadh Development Authority (now the Royal Commission for Riyadh) required a design that:
-
Respected the desert environment
-
Used forms and materials native to the Najd culture
-
Avoided “neo-orientalism”—no copying, no artificial revival styles
-
Introduced innovative structural solutions suitable for climate, function, and symbolism
To meet these requirements, the project team integrated lightweight tensile structures with traditional architectural massing—creating a seamless fusion of heritage and modernity.

The Concept
The designers envisioned the Palace as:
-
A desert fortress opening into lush internal gardens
-
Combined with a series of Bedouin-inspired tensile tents rising above the walls
-
A building that creates microclimates, shade, filtered daylight, and thermal comfort
To realize this vision, the tent structures required an advanced membrane able to perform flawlessly in Riyadh’s extreme climate while delivering iconic aesthetics.

The Materials
Taiyo Middle East supplied the PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) membrane system that forms all major tensile roof components of the Palace.
Our role included:
-
Supplying premium-grade PTFE material designed for desert climates
-
Ensuring long-term resistance to UV, heat, dust, and sand abrasion
-
Providing technical support and material performance data for the engineering teams
-
Supporting installation requirements to ensure membrane behavior matched design expectations

The Result
Why PTFE Was Critical
PTFE was selected for its exceptional performance:
-
Extreme durability – over 30+ year lifespan
-
High tensile strength – ideal for tent and cable-supported structures
-
Self-cleaning surface – dust and sand easily wash off
-
Outstanding UV and heat resistance – essential for Riyadh’s climate
-
Stable translucency – allows diffused daylight to illuminate interior vegetation
-
Fire resistance – meets international standards for public buildings
Client Benefits from Using Taiyo PTFE
By choosing Taiyo Middle East’s material, the client gained:
-
Long-term reliability: minimal maintenance over decades
-
Thermal comfort: tensile tents reduce solar gain and reflect heat
-
Visual identity: pure, clean PTFE surfaces define the iconic look of the Palace
-
Cultural relevance: material expresses the “modern Bedouin tent” concept without imitation
-
Environmental performance: improved microclimate, reduced mechanical cooling load
Our PTFE enabled the designer’s vision of a modern, sustainable, culturally symbolic palace.
Final Outcome
The completed Tuwaiq Palace stands today as:
-
A globally recognized architectural landmark
-
A functional cultural and social hub with event, dining, recreation, and accommodation facilities
-
A successful demonstration of how advanced tensile structures transform desert architecture
-
An enduring symbol of innovation—bridging Saudi heritage with world-class engineering
Thanks in part to Taiyo Middle East’s PTFE technology, the Palace continues to maintain its original elegance, structural clarity, and environmental performance. The PTFE membranes remain a core element of the building’s identity, proving their longevity after nearly four decades.
